A New Book Review

Just before Christmas Penguin sent me this fabulous new book to review. Fortunately it is not on sale until the 31st of January, so I have a little time left to tell you all about it.
This hardcover treasury is perfect for beginner sewers or those (like me) who have never had an actual sewing lesson and need a bit of help with the techniques required to finish your sewing projects neatly and properly. It is ordered into chapters that cover things like Hems and Edges and Pockets.
The title is very appropriate as it does show step-by-step photos of techniques such as Puff sleeves, shawl collars, facing a neckline and lapped zip insertion. There are photos of different types of tools, machine feet, fabrics and threads. It shows you how to read a pattern and take your body measurements too. I think it is the perfect go-to book for whatever sewing task you are undertaking. Whilst the book is mainly geared towards dress-making, there is information on curtains, belts and tiebacks too, and much of the knowledge translates to other sewing applications too.

About the author:

Alison set up her own shop, Fabulous Fabric, and sewing school, the Alison Victoria School of Sewing, near her home in Leicestershire. Her school is the largest independent sewing school in England and offers courses and workshops on all aspects of sewing. Alison is a regular contributor to Sewing World magazine, and has appeared on the ITV television series Ladette to Lady teaching dressmaking skills.

  1. I saw another post about this book last night, it looks like a really valuable addition to the bookcase! I've been saving up for another sewing book but it's much more expensive than this one which looks just as good!
    Can't wait until it's released!
