Matilda

Tonight we said goodbye to our beautiful girl, Matilda. She had been a loving and loyal member of our family for 16 years.

So many wonderful memories

She will be missed.

Old Dog

These pics were snapped the other day by the Ballerina on her i-pod. I thought that they were just gorgeous shots of our old dog. Matilda has been with us for a very long time. Almost as long as The Teen and certainly longer than The Ballerina. It was in fact over 16 years ago when she came into our lives as a dear little puppy. She was bright eyed and excitable, but such a loyal and happy dog. Throughout her years, she has survived a knee operation, cancer and being run over by the car. She is deaf and nearly blind now, unsteady on her feet and sleeps most of the time. She still loves her food, gets excited by the lawn mower and is happy to be patted and made a fuss of. It is only very recently that I have stopped talking her for walks, but she still goes around in a wobbly circle if she sees me in my runners!

I love the story of how we got her, and thought I would like to share it with you. 16 years ago I was working at a small rural kindergarten (ironically I am working there again now) The children had excitedly ran to the fence to talk to a man on a bike. He had several puppies in a basket on the front of the bike. I got talking to him and he told me that the black and white puppies were for two local farmers and he was in the process of delievering them. "But what about the brown and white one?" I asked. He told me that he was going to drown her in the river. I was horrified and told him that he could not possibly do that. He informed me that she was not a smart dog and was not suited to farm life and would have no purpose. I immediately declared that I would have her and he promptly opened the gate and handed her to me, laughing, saying "Don't say you weren't warned"

Well as it turns out, Matilda certainly is not the smartest of dogs. I'm sure our guinea pigs used to laugh at her tripping over her own feet, but we love her and are trying to cherish the time that we have left with her, as I am sure that won't be for too much longer.

In Your Neighbourhood (subtitle: That's one way to meet your neighbour)

The other night, about 6.30pm the rain had eased and the Ballerina and I set out for a walk with our dog. Matilda is an old dog now, 16 years of age with all manner of ailments. But she still loves her walk, getting excited when she sees the leash. She goes in a wonky circle and wags her tail. She can't walk too far these days but she is always keen to go.
So we set off. Along the way we came across a child's wagon at some ones's front fence with some lemons in it. A sign declared "Free lemons. Please take" So I dutifully obliged, putting some in the pockets of my coat. We continued on our way, chatting as we went. The lemons felt pleasantly heavy in my pockets.
A bit further on we came to a corner and a road to cross. We had just got across the road when out of the corner of my eye I spotted a giant dog charging across the road, towards us. I swung around pulling Matilda away from the road just as the dog descended upon us. It all happened so fast.  I screamed as the dog jumped onto Matilda's back, forcing her onto the ground. Two cars stopped, obviously aware of the potential for a diastrous situation. The dog, a German Shepherd  took off. I  heard someone calling it from up the street. Thankfully, Matilda was unhurt, but clearly shocked and unable to get up at first. The driver of the car closest to us, came running over. He said he saw what appeared like a lion running across the road. A bit of discussion and checking that we were OK followed. Then he revealed "I know this dog. I've seen it from my place. You are my neighbour" What a surprise. I had no idea who had moved into the new place at the back of us. In fact I only know a few neighbours to wave to, and even fewer to have a chat to. And only one to call on if I need any help. Such a difference from the neighbourhood of my childhood. A street where everyone knew everyone. A street where you had a multutude of playmates. A street where you could 'borrow' a cup of sugar. Although times have changed, it is nice to know that people do still care about their neighbours.

Flash

FlashPoor Flash is no longer with us. He has been deteriorating over the last few months, getting really small and losing his fur. I have just found him under a pile of wood, the place where all the piggies seem to go to die. It was only a matter of time. He was such a dear little guinea pig, the father of three sons and always up for a cuddle. he is survived by one son, who is quite distressed.
This picture was taken back in 05, when we actually thought that Flash was a girl! Look how young Miss C looks too. How am I going to break this news to her?

FLASH update

Well he is still with us! It appears that the other three piggies have been picking on him. Not to mention that naughty Chai bunny has been chasing him. He has moved back into the palace, but won't come out of his little wooden box that C made for him at school in tooltime! He has also sprouted some new grey hairs, but is as cute as ever, and oh so loved! Thanks for your kind thoughts and best wishes xxx

Wait and see!

Flash, our longest standing guinea pig, and the friendliest (least neurotic) one has been unwell today. Here is after having a lovely cool bath. He appeared to be having trouble walking, and one eye was very weepy. He wouldn't come into the guinea pig palace at night time, but had been eating fine. We'll have to see what tomorrow brings....

*I have just e-mailed off my job application for a new position for 2009, have to see what that brings too!

A bit too much excitement (subtitle: b***** pets)

Tonight I was out walking the dog when her legs gave way and she collasped onto the footpath. Had to call hubby to come and get us in the
car. Whilst we were checking her out back at home, we thought there was a chance that the rabbit may have escaped from the garage. Had a look around couldn't see her. About an hour later (9.30pm) get a knock on the door from a couple asking if it was our rabbit out on the street. Almost caught her, and then she ran several houses up and then hid under their car. Lots of crawling around under said car, followed by herding and chasing, finally got her back home!! (puffed out, too much excitement for one night!)
